Another day, another Disney remake. The longer the list of live-action Disney remakes gets, the more satisfied I am with the state of the universe. But, I suppose I’m easy to please.
As kids, our first references of characters such as Princess Jasmine and Ariel are from Disney and we expect them to be a certain way. I, for one, couldn’t imagine a blonde Belle or a green Genie – not for any other reason than the fact that that’s not what we know.
People are totally missing the point. Those of us who are 25+ grew up with an image of what #Ariel looked like. Disney has done a great job previously casting for their live action films to bring our childhood to life. This is just a lazy attempt at diversity on Disney’s behalf. pic.twitter.com/9Jt7grue3U

So, whenever a live-action version is in the works, we all begin to form ideas of how the creatives are going to take the characters out of cartoon-form and into human-form. Disney has recently announced that the “human version” of Ariel, will be actress Halle Bailey (not to be confused with Halle Berry).
The thing about The Little Mermaid is that it was really only Ariel’s hair that made her different from the other princesses – a hair colour that no one really has naturally anyway, so no harm done there as long as that hair is red.
But, other people have different issues with the casting
I have nothing against the black community but Disney should have just stick to the orginal Ariel, white and redhead. Appropriation is a must. Kinda disappointed. C’mon #Disney pic.twitter.com/EUKjA0idtr

In fact, there’s a whole #NotMyAriel trending tag on Twitter
Seriously @Disney seriously?! #NotMyAriel pic.twitter.com/GHf07dc25J

But, others are having absolutely none of it
These people complaining about the casting of a black woman for Ariel. ??♀️Ariel is half fish, breathes underwater, is best friends with a seagull and has her voice stolen by a woman with tentacles…But dark skin?! Now that’s just far fetched…?

Racist white people when they know that Ariel will be a black woman pic.twitter.com/nHnu56SFyH

It’s true that Ariel from The Little Mermaid being a black woman is really unexpected but why not after all? I mean, she’s cute and there’s no rule saying that mermaids must be white, and even if that was the case they’re from fictions so adapting them to our era would be fine. pic.twitter.com/D86BLR14ew

And raising some valid points
Tiana, Mulan and Moana’s race are integral to contextualizing their stories and struggles. Ariel’s, on the other hand, as a MERMAID, is not. She could literally be played by anyone and it wouldn’t impact her story.

ALSO THIS
Whatever colour Ariel is I just really want her to know that men aren’t worth giving up your magical powers for.

This is a majorly conflicted situation but, let’s be honest, we’re going to love this film regardless of the drama. SO EXCITED.
