It feels as though we’re perpetually taking one step forward and two steps back for inclusivity. During an event in London, Prince Charles announced a new ambassador for a British charitable organisation.
The move has sparked outrage online not simply because Perry is (obviously) not British but the organisation in question is the British Asian Trust, and Perry is neither British nor Asian.
Prince Charles said Katy has a “long-standing commitment to charitable causes around the world”. Saigon Love Story film-maker Ringo Le said: “This is what happens when white people listen to Joaquin Phoenix’s BAFTA speech about dismantling systematic racism.”
Perry is engaged to British actor Orlando Bloom and previously married ex-husband Russell Brand in India, saying that the country “has long held a special place” in her heart. She continued: “On my last visit, I was able to meet with the Prince of Wales and the other leaders in Mumbai.”
However, marrying Brits and visiting India certainly does not a British-Asian make.
And, Twitter is not happy
