[ad_1]

As the year draws to a close, we start reflecting on what has made it great – the friends we’ve made (and lost) along the way, the choices we’ve made and all the wonderful memories we’ll be carrying into the rest of our lives. But, nothing makes an impact on our existence quite like a Twitter trend. And, this year, Twitter was king, providing us with hilarious, historical and life-altering content.

Here is what you missed from 2019’s groundbreaking Twitter magic

1. #Gackt

We still don’t really know why the year kicked off with #Gackt trending. The Japanese musician, who didn’t really do anything, sent Twitter into a frenzy, mostly because people were asking why he was trending.

2. #InAWorldWithoutTwitter

If we’re being honest, tweeting about what the world would be like without Twitter is peak 2019. And, yet, #InAWorldWithoutTwitter was trending this Spring. The tweets are a mix of genuine and jokes yet most of them all hold a grain of truth in them and reveal the best and worst of Twitter as a platform.

3. “JK Rowling Reveals”

The phrase “JK Rowling reveals,” sends shockwaves throughout the interweb as many of us cling onto the untouched childhood memories, preparing to have them shattered forever by Rowling’s latest revelation. So, the Twitterverse decided to harness the phrase and play a fun little game of “What Would JK Rowling Reveal About You.” All you have to do is type “JK Rowling reveals that you…” and press the middle predictive text until you have a sentence.

4. #DadQuotes

Thanks to late night host, Jimmy Fallon, the Twitterverse blew with some absolute corkers that our dad’s have come out with. And, however embarrassing, we frankly could not get enough. Laugh it up folks, you’re glaring into your futures!

5. #ReleaseTheArnoldCut

With the release of a new season of Big Little Lies, viewers began to notice that the edits seemed a little disjointed. It was then revealed that Andrea Arnold, the original producer who began work on the season, was railroaded by colleagues who decided to have Jean-Marc Vallée come in to handle the post-production. In a warm, fuzzy sense of justice, fans and fellow members of the industry began a trending hashtag: “#ReleaseTheArnoldCut” in which they called for Arnold’s work to be released to the public – in all its’ glory.

6. #LostTrumpHistory

In July, during an interview with German reporter Stephan Bachenheimer, Trump claimed that hundreds of his men pitched in to help recover Ground Zero in the days after the terrorist attacks, but according to Snopes, his involvement has yet to be proven. Since the details of Trump’s involvement in 9/11 recovery are so uncertain, Twitter users decided to mock the president’s not-so-humble brag by creating the hashtag #LostTrumpHistory. They used it to joke about other historical events that Trump certainly did not attend, and also to show off their Photoshop skills.

7. #SaveSpiderman

In August, we received harrowing news that after Sony and Disney failed to come to an agreement, the two decided to split, taking Spiderman out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The discussion between Sony and Disney relied pretty solely on money in that Disney wanted better terms, and Sony liked the terms they already had. Luckily, it was put right with Spider-Man is coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, after the news broke that Spider-Man will no longer be part of the MCU, fans flocked to social media to vent.

8. “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100%…”

Lizzo is life. Since taking the world by storm with her zero-effs attitude, killer vocals and curves for days, the singer has become one of the biggest icons in the music industry. With tracks like ‘Juice’ and ‘Boys’, the artists lyrics are nothing if not super empowering. However, it’s her boss babe anthem ‘Truth Hurts,’ that inspired people in a hilarious way. Lizzo starts the song with “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that b*tch,” and, it turned out that the Twitterverse is a whole lot of other things too.

9. #MyWorstCostume

Bin bags, broomsticks, tin-foil, we’ve all had a total Halloween fail. But, thanks to Jimmy Fallon, rather that being swallowed up by our own misery, we could laugh along to the misery of others. During a segment on his show, the comedian began a trend that went viral. Thus, the #MyWorstCostume hashtag was born.

10. #StartAnArgumentInFourWords

The wonderful world of Twitter did it again, with a trending hashtag that is bound to ruffle a feather or two. As human beings, we all have certain buttons that can cause us to go off, a lot of these buttons are triggered by phrases such as “calm down,” or “iPhone is better than Android.” To harness these triggers, Twitter users created #StartAnArgumentInFourWords, a trending tag that saw people creating great rage with just four simple words.
