We’ve all tried it and it’s just a bit of fun. The latest FaceApp trend has seen celebrities and your average mere mortals fast-forwarding through time to see how they might look in their old age.
However, to one particular person, this app is far more sinister. Essam al-Roubi, a graduate of Egypt’s most highly rated Islamic university, told local Cairo24 that the FaceApp challenge is forbidden because it “changes God’s creation”.
Although we’re not entirely sure of the specifics behind this statement, al-Roubi told the media outlet that, “This application is a type of craze that leads to undesirable consequences.” He then continued with, “Do these images really show what will happen to people? No. Only God knows that.”
To prove his point, Al-Roubi referred to the holy Quran
One of the verses he claims supports his theory is verse 119 of Surat al-Nisaa which states: “I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah.”
Another verse is verse 70 of Surat al-Israa, which reads: “And We have certainly honoured the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created.”
Since the trend began, there’s been a number of pretty great results
