Mum crying in supermarket shows the ridiculousness of bulk-buying

Looks like some of us still aren’t quite getting it. Bulk-buying, the act of stocking up on necessary items such as toilet paper (?!) has been spreading all over the world. And, although no one really knows what we think is going to happen to our bowels over the next few weeks, the number of people following suit is increasing. This results in supermarkets selling out of items that people actually need.

So, let’s put this into perspective, shall we? In a video uploaded to TikTok, mother of four, 36-year-old Lauren Whitney broke down after visiting multiple stores looking for diapers for her youngest daughter. In the video, Whitney, fighting back tears asks “how am I supposed to diaper my child if I can’t afford 20 at a time like you can?”

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Whitney said: “I took the video intending to keep it in my drafts, but accidentally uploaded it and logged on an hour later to see it went viral. I debated taking it down, but decided it needed to be seen,”

“I’d love for people to realize that all this panic-buying and hoarding is making it hard for lower income families or families on a budget,”

“Some people can’t get to the stores when the trucks arrive. Some people don’t have the money to go when the trucks arrive because they get paid later. If we all just purchased what we needed at the time, the shelves would stay stocked.”

When asked if she managed to find the diapers, she said: “I found two boxes in her size. I purchased one and left the other for someone else.” And, that, is how you ‘human’.
