If you want to have (or at least witness) a real, honest conversation, you go to the Red Table. Earlier this month, rapper T.I. “Tip” Harris came under-fire when he made a comment about having a doctor regularly check his daughter’s hymen to ensure she was still a virgin. Naturally, the world was livid about his apparent control over his daughter’s body as well as his lack of education over how the female body works.
For the first time since the incident, Harris spoke out during a Red Table Talk with his wife Tiny, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Jones.
During the talk, a number of concerns were raised with the rapper all concluding to a lack of understanding about what it means to be a woman. It may not seem like rocket science, but, men have as much knowledge about life as a woman as they do about life as a horse – you can’t really know what something means until you’ve lived it first-hand. And whether we want to or not, we have no idea what it’s like to be a man.
At some point, as women, we’ve all been part of a conversation with a man who doesn’t really “get” what it means to be a woman in a patriarchal society, some literally don’t even know what the term means – a la Harris. However, meeting the ignorance with outrage and anger doesn’t seem to be working, instead we’re dubbed “crazy feminists” and dismissed. So, ladies, we’ve got a job to do. It’s time to educate the men in our lives, have open conversations and listen to one another.
Here’s a brief break-down of how Jada, Adrienne and Tiny kicked off the conversations we should be having with the opposite sex.
First, Will decided to duck-out of the conversation which was definitely the right move
T.I. publicly apologised to his daughter for humiliating her
Then called upon the magnificent women in the room to help him understand how to be a father in this day and age
To which Jada responded by explaining what she tells her husband Will, that a mother’s role is to educate her daughter and a father’s role is to support her
T.I. then made a bit of a dodgy comment about control
And Adrienne looked at him like this
Jada hit ’em with the science
Adrienne hit ’em with the double-standards
T.I. said he didn’t really understand what “patriarchal society” meant, so Jada explained
Then T.I. dropped a truth bomb, sprinkled with a little epiphany for his own mindset
Jada told the table about how daughter Willow deals with her father’s insensitive comments
And it’s perfect
T.I. admitted his own ignorance towards life as a woman and said it was just a matter of respect for one-another
Then concluded with this perfect summary
And that’s how it’s done. You can always count on these ladies to give the world something to think about. Check out the full Red Table Talk here.
