If you’re reading this, it’s probably best to start by checking the date. Yep, it’s 2019, people! Unfortunately some of us seem to struggle with the concept that times are changing and time itself, is moving ever forward. And, those people are the ones refusing to let society progress.
In an example of this hindrance on advancement, ABC News anchor, Lara Spencer had a pretty significant hiccup whilst on air over the weekend. During a segment, Spencer began talking about Prince George’s hectic schedule, detailing his new classes which involve religious studies, poetry, computer programming and… “Bah-lay.” Which, some of us may recognise as ballet.
Whilst trying to contain her laughter, she then continued with, “Prince William says George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you, Prince William. We’ll see how long that lasts.”
The on-air “oops” that sparked outrage across social media
Lara Spencer, who mocked a little boy for studying ballet, is just another symptom of the dumbing down of America and our generalized lack of appreciation for art. It speaks volumes.

Shame on Lara Spencer and GMA for the shaming and mocking of young Prince George for liking ballet. I am outraged as a professional dancer and dance teacher. I am also not surprised. It all starts from the top. Making fun of and bullying is now sadly normalized.

As a lifelong ballet dancer, I say to Good Morning America crew:
1. Stop pushing dangerous beliefs based on toxic masculinity and apologize to Prince George for your ignorance
2. I dare Lara Spencer et al to try it

I mean, laughing at a 6-year-old is bad enough, but when it’s in the context of him being passionate and “loving” something, that is NOT okay. Especially when your giggling comes from a place where you are reinforcing toxic masculinity in that it makes a boy less of a male if he enjoys things that society deems as “feminine” for no reason at all. And, I certainly don’t need to tell you that it’s perfectly okay for a male to enjoy dancing because men can dance.
Seriously,
Men
Can
Dance
Lara has since apologised, posting on her Instagram with the caption: “My sincere apologies for an insensitive comment I made in pop news yesterday. From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT. I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions. Go climb your mountain-and love every minute of it.” But, meh.
