The Marvel Universe Finally Has A Hijabi Character

A baby step for representation in the MCU, and a giant leap for the Middle Eastern world. And that’s one more reason to look forward to your friendly, neighbourhood Spiderman this weekend.

Zoha Rahman is officially starring the Spiderman: Far From Home as one of Peter Parker’s friends, accompanying him along on a field trip in Europe.

In an interview with Forbes, the British actress and model revealed how elated she was to be granted this opportunity. “It meant so much to me, for me to have the opportunity to a play a character and represent so many girls that I know personally and that I love and admire,” she added.

Rahman also told Forbes that she auditioned for the role without knowing what it actually was. It was only upon arriving and receiving her lines did she realize what part she was called in to play.

“We grow up watching television and blockbuster movies. And if we don’t see ourselves on those screens, then we don’t really exist, do we?” she said. And what better way to prove this, break stereotypes and shine through other than starring in a highly anticipated film such as this one.

Spiderman: Far From Home releases in theatres tomorrow.
