This method will actually make you fall asleep in 60 seconds, apparently

sSomewhere between childhood to adulthood, sleep goes from something we try to avoid but can’t to being something we crave but can’t get. But, while you’re drowning in whale sounds and lavender oil there may actually be a much simpler way to get the Z’s you desperately need.

Dr Andrew Weil, a specialist in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona described the method by saying, “It’s the single best method that I’ve found for dealing with getting back to sleep if you wake up in the middle of the night”.

He further explained that technique is a breathing exercise that originally comes from Indian yogis who use it during meditation. The practise simply involves inhaling through your nose, holding your breath for four seconds, then repeating and holding your breath for seven seconds and finally holding your breath for eight seconds. Then you repeat the practise until you fall asleep.

Dr Weil also said, “The theory is that by imposing certain rhythms on the breath with your voluntary system, gradually these are induced into the involuntary nervous system.

“And that comes with time. So it’s the regularity of doing this over a period of weeks, months, years that produces the changes that you want.”

The practise also helps with anxiety and stress and its calming effects can be used throughout the day.
