Kuwaiti influencer Ghadeer Sultan is facing huge backlash after she uploaded photos and videos to her instagram sporting a totally different look. And by “look,” we mean “race.” To start, Sultan posted a video of her in a singing booth with USA for Africa’s “We Are The World,” playing in the background – the charity single that was created to raise funds for starvation in Africa. Sultan bizarrely dons a very dark complexion as clips of Mary J Blige and Barbra Streisand flash past.
Yes, it’s as weird as it sounds
Sultan received a lot of backlash online, with one user saying: “sis that’s a blackface what are u doing???” as well as being outraged, people are just generally baffled by the purpose of the video and look. One user commented: “What you did there is totally wrong..you can’t do the blackface that considered a racist action …and idk why are you doing those expressions and moves which are totally different from what the song is talking about.” And another user called the whole concept “offensive” saying: “This is the most offensive thing i’ve seen. You can portray togetherness without disrespecting an entire culture. So uneducated, this is beyond unnecessary and unacceptable.”
Yesterday, Sultan seemingly responded to the backlash with ANOTHER picture of her in blackface, saying: “I am not racist .. I hate racism What I’ve done is only to show what i am capable of… I love you all Life is meant for living… living with love and passion for every one without thinking of what they are could really change your life …. Think 2020 and live with passion for all peoples.”
So, apparently 2019 forgot to teach some of us how to behave. DO BETTER.
