Turtle found dead with 104 pieces of plastic in its stomach

380 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide each year, with an estimated 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently afloat at sea. This means that marine life is severely affected by the waste, with 267 different animal species becoming entangled and the average content of plastic in the stomachs of fish at a terrifying 9.2%.

These horrifying statistics are the motivation between many households adopting “no-waste” lifestyles, but with stories like these, it’s still not enough. Last week, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center posted a tragic story alongside an image of a deceased turtle, captioning it:

“Not such a happy #TurtleTuesday this week. It’s washback season at Gumbo Limbo and weak, tiny turtles are washing up along the coastline needing our help. Unfortunately, not every washback survives. 100% of our washbacks that didn’t make it had plastic in their intestinal tracts. This turtle, which would fit in the palm of your hand, had eaten 104 pieces of plastic. This is a sad reminder that we all need to do our part to keep our oceans plastic free.”

Every single turtle that was found dead has ingested plastic. Every. Single. One.
