If you were wondering why the shows such as Sacred Games and Lust Stories from the International Emmy Awards were nowhere to be found when the final announcements were made last night, here’s what actually went down.
The 71 Emmys, taking place at the Microsoft Theater in LA, saw Fleabag, Game of Thrones and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel win big last night. However, the ceremony has no room for international content whatsoever. Where were the International Emmy Awards?
Turns out, this will be a separate ceremony altogether, which will take place in New York on the 25th of November. The reason for this distinction comes from this particular criteria from the Emmy Awards rule book:
Furthermore, for shows that premiere on online streaming websites such as Amazon and Netflix, Emmy guidelines state: “programs (and individual achievements within them) are eligible for nomination if they were originally aired by broadband to markets representing at least 50% or more of U.S. households.”
Saif Ali Khan, the lead actor for Sacred Games who reprised his role as ‘Sartaj Singh’ in the Netflix Original’s second season recently, has received a nomination for this acting. “It’s great (moment), I mean the idea was to do something honest on a platform that is kind of international. Something like ‘Narcos’ that is a Netflix original and they encourage you tell your story the way you do but in an international way to an international audience. Hence I feel in a way it is well deserved to have been nominated at an international platform. Full credit to the team and the production and of course the directors and the lovely actors,” he said.
We will just have to wait till November 25th to see how well India does as compared to the other nominations such as UK’s McMafia, Germany’s Bad Banks and Brazil’s 1 Contra Todos – Season 3.
