As humans, we’re constantly discovering more and more about our solar system and the planets around us. There’s so much to learn that we couldn’t possibly even imagine. Something none of us could have imagined? The sun is made of caramel popcorn.

Okay, not exactly but it sure as heck looks like it!

The National Science Foundation recently uploaded images of the sun’s surface – in the highest definition they’ve ever been. NSF wrote in a statement that these images show the “turbulent” movement of the plasma amid an array of cell-like structures. Fun fact, each of these “bubbles” are actually each about the size of Texas (twice the size of the entire United Kingdom).

And, it’s kind of creepy to look at

“That hot solar plasma rises in the bright centers of ‘cells,’ cools, then sinks below the surface in dark lanes in a process known as convection,” the statement read.

“It’s extremely exciting to be a solar physicist at this point in time, with all of these missions,” says Thomas Rimmele, an astronomer and project director of DKIST at the National Solar Observatory. “With just the first images [from DKIST], you see detail that we’ve never seen before. And this is really just the beginning.”
